Lucya Spencer is an extraordinary woman, leader and community activist who has won several awards in Canada for her work, including the 2011 BWCEN Champion Award. She is the executive Director of Immigrant Woman Services Ottawa (IWSO). BWCEN describes her a “tireless, committed volunteer for more than two decades, addressing issues affecting immigrant women and children.” Lucya has also served as a member of the Committee of Immigrant Services in Eastern Ontario; and is a former president of the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa. She is currently the president of LASI World Skills, a charity that enhances the integration of newcomers into the local economy and a member of the Professional Women’s Advisory Board.

Magdalene Cooman is the founder for www.tuneinandstepup.com and the author of Live Your Future Now. She is also the Director of Employer Engagement at LASI World Skills, a non-for-profit organization in Ottawa which supports the economic integration of newcomers to Canada. She has spear headed and collaborated with several partnering organizations to implement several initiatives in Ottawa which has resulted in employment for thousands of newcomers. As an entrepreneur, she is the owner of Simplified Training and Facilitation, a company which provides training and facilitation services to the community. She has authored several curriculums which has benefited hundreds of front line staff as well as newcomers to Canada.

She is a Saint Lucian National who is a graduate from the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and the Mico University College in Jamaica. She is also a new graduate with a Practical Master’s of Business Administration, from the Caswell Corporate Coaching Company.
Ambassador Dr. Joseph Edsel Edmunds is a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico (BSA in Agronomy) and Cornell University (MSc and PhD in Plant Pathology and Nematology, respectively).
He is a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO. He has served as: Director of Research and Development of the Windward Islands Banana Research and Development Center; Ambassador of St Lucia to the United Nations (UN), the Organization of American States (OAS), and the United States of America (USA); Senator in the Government of St Lucia; Senior Research Fellow at the University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine Campus; and Director of the General Secretariat of the OAS in Suriname. He is a former Dean of the Caribbean Diplomatic Corps and former Vice-Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Washington. He is Black Professionals in International Affairs Ambassador-at-Large to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Ambassador Edmunds has served as consultant to various international agencies on projects in the South Pacific, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean; chaired a committee to review the educational system in St Lucia; produced a “Working Document on Program of Support for Democracy and Good Governance in the Caribbean” for the OAS; and contributed to a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) report on Governance in the Caribbean.
He has presented, published and participated in several projects related to science and technology, agriculture, education, democracy and governance, and youth leadership activities relevant to the Caribbean and international affairs. His book entitled “The Triangle of Success: For our Youth, Leaders of Tomorrow” has been acclaimed by distinguished educators, youth leaders, teachers and parents as a scholarly and practical guide for the development of youth, motivating and empowering them in the achievement of their potential. In addition to his work as a scientist, statesman, diplomat and leader, he has published a book of poems and has exhibited his paintings in the USA, Canada and the Caribbean.
Included in his various awards is the Office of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), awarded by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, for his contribution to science; the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award for International Service from the International Salute to the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee; and the nematode, Longidorus edmunsi, was named in his honor for his contribution to Nematology. He has been cited as a Pioneer in the Conservation Movement in St Lucia and a Caribbean Icon in Science, Research and Innovation.

Between October 2007 and December 2008, Corinne was the Director General of the Labour Market Integration Directorate at HRSDC, responsible for the work of the Foreign Credential Recognition Program, Labour Mobility, the Going to Canada Immigration Portal, and the Skills and Labour Market Information Division (National Occupational Classification system, occupational information and Essential Skills research).
In December 2008, Corinne joined Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) as the Director General of the Foreign Credentials Referral Office (FCRO).
In January 2013, she was named Director General for both the Integration Branch and FCRO, a role that will expand her connections to settlement partners across Canada.
Corinne graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science from the University of Ottawa in 1985 and received her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Calgary in 1991.
Corinne grew up in northern Saskatchewan and now makes her home in Chelsea, Quebec, with her two beautiful children.
Mengistab Tsegaye has worked over 25 years in the newcomer’s settlement and integration sector, and he was an immigrant himself. He has a Social Work background and extensive experience in employment issues and the challenges newcomers face.
