Last Friday, my team and I held an Employers Event all day long. The morning part consisted of five coaches who came to share their own personal career journeys with our newcomer professionals who are seeking employment. All of the speakers were inspiring and the audience were completely engrossed in the presentations.
Just before the event started, I received an e-mail from one of the speakers, Jonathan SOWAH, president and CEO of Astraqom, who told me that he was running late because he had just arrived at the airport. At that moment, I felt bad that he had to fly in to speak at our event. Why did I feel bad? Because in my own mind, our event, is JUST a small event.
When Jonathan was about to leave, I went to him to apologize that he had to fly in to Ottawa JUST for this event. He looked at me a little bit dumbfounded and said, “THIS is what is important!”
I felt embarrassed within myself. Yes, he must be a busy man and I felt absolutely thrilled that he came to speak to us. However, my mind started to dissect the experience and I started to attach the thought that our event was JUST a small event which did not require such a huge effort. This was NOT true! Our event was IMPORTANT. Our event was about changing lives, giving hope and inspiration and helping newcomers to find appropriate employment opportunities in Canada. This is IMPORTANT work! It is not JUST an event!
During his delivery to the audience, Jonathan emphasized on two main things: “Guarding Your MIND and on the VALUE which you bring to the table.”
What VALUE are you bringing to the table? What VALUE was I bringing to Jonathan? What value was I bringing to the professionals who were in the room and who were so much in need of listening to his life/entrepreneurial experience and that of the other speakers?
That evening, when I went home, I got a note from one of the newcomer professionals who attended the session and it reinforced to me again the importance of the work which we do at work. WE do IMPORTANT WORK… Not JUST work!
“I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of Applied Science Workshops. I was really happy with all workshops and with the opportunity to network with professionals from different organizations. Today I enjoyed the presentations of people who explain about their experience and journeys. I was moved by Johnathan’s speech which gave me goose bumps. It was so powerful that it went straight to my heart.I had a chance to talk to Sharon Pypops from City of Ottawa and we had a great connection. I talked to David Lapen and I was really impressed about his work and the way he was explaining to us about the research. These people are very inspiring and I want to thank you for this opportunity.” AP
